Remembering NPR Book Critic Alan Cheuse

Creative Commons

A member of the All Things Considered family died today. Alan Cheuse, who reviewed books on the show almost every week since the early 1980s, was in a car accident in California two weeks ago and never regained consciousness. He was 75 years old.

Cheuse, an author himself, was also known by North Texans as a regular reviewer for the Dallas Morning News. The paper's books editor, Michael Merschel, said he wasn't your average book critic.

"How many other book reviewers could your average person on the street name in today's world," Merschel said. "And Alan's name is one whose would come up. They knew him by name, there are not a lot of other book critics alive in America today who you could say that about."
