The top local stories this evening from the KERA Newsroom:

Animal shelters across North Texas are overwhelmed with an influx of cats and dogs. It’s a chronic summertime problem. But it could be even worse if it weren’t for the scores of volunteers who roam the streets, looking to help stray animals. And a friend of the Dallas hiker who died hiking in New Mexico urges others to take the mountains very seriously.

You can listen to the segment weekdays at 6:20 p.m. and 8:20 a.m. on KERA 90.1 FM.

Courtney Collins has been working as a broadcast journalist since graduating from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University in 2004. Before coming to KERA in 2011, Courtney worked as a reporter for NPR member station WAMU in Washington D.C. While there she covered daily news and reported for the station’s weekly news magazine, Metro Connection.
