The top local stories this evening from the KERA Newsroom: Entrepreneurs and inventors in North Texas are celebrating today. On Monday morning, a new regional United States Patent and Trademark Office opened in Dallas. Dozens applied for an office in 2011, and only four locations were chosen across the country.

The monarch butterfly population is dwindling and that has scientists worried. The monarch’s migratory path is one of the longest in the world from Canada to Mexico, where many spend the winter. Texas plays an important role in their journey. Gail Manning is an entomologist with the Fort Worth Botanic Garden and spoke about the butterflies.

Over the weekend, a UT Southwestern geneticist won one of science’s biggest awards. Helen Hobbs was named a winner of the Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences for her work on cholesterol research. She co-launched something called the Dallas Heart Study.

Along with a $3 million prize, Hobbs was honored for her work in identifying the genes behind lipid metabolism and fatty liver disease.
