The top local stories this morning from the KERA Newsroom: The first debate between the candidates for Texas governor will be tonight in the Rio Grande Valley. The focus has been on the region for other reasons -- the increased number of Central Americans crossing the border – and residents say the national attention has brought stereotypes.  

Also, North Texas Giving Day broke its own record, and astronaut Ed Lu talks about the lure of the private space industry.
