At Least 10 Killed In West Texas Prison Bus Crash

Tom Michael/Marfa Public Radio
A prison bus collided with a train in Penwell Wednesday morning. At least 10 people are dead.

Ten people killed in the crash of a prison bus in West Texas include eight prisoners and two guards.

Authorities say the bus skidded off an icy highway in Penwell, west of Odessa, slid down an embankment and collided with a passing freight train.

Four prisoners and another guard were injured in Wednesday morning's crash in Penwell. No one on the train was hurt.

State officials say the bus was taking the inmates from the Middleton prison in Abilene to the Sanchez prison in El Paso.

They say the bus driver may have lost control because of an earlier accident on the Interstate 20 overpass.

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick has issued a statement offering condolences to the families of those killed in the wreck.
