A Geek's Guide To Record Store Day, From Hüsker Dü To The Impulse Buy

KXT program director Mark Abuzzahab pulls out a hand-pressed, marbled vinyl copy of 'The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends,' released in a 10,000 unit run for Record Store Day 2012.

Saturday is National Record Store Day, when special limited-edition releases appear on the shelves of music shops around the country – and quickly disappear. Mark Abuzzahab is program director for our sister station, KXT 91.7. He tells us his game plan for emerging with treasures from the greats -- and shares the best Record Store Day buys in his trove.

Mark goes to Bull Moose Music in Maine every summer -- one of Record Store Day's originating stores when the event began in 2007. And well before that, he thought of "record store day" as a regular pilgrimage to Amoeba Records in L.A.

Here's what's going on this Record Store Day in North Texas -- really, it's just a thicker slice of what shops in the area have to offer any day of the week:

Dallas: GOOD RECORDS 7th ANNUAL RECORD STORE DAY AND 14th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION. Stardeath & White Dwarfs/Tyson Meade of Chainsaw Kittens, Midlake, Pinkish Black, others. (open at 7 a.m.; music starts at 10 a.m. and goes until after midnight.) 

RECORD STORE DAY 2014 AT CD SOURCE -- Quentin Moore, Nicholas Altobelli, Matthew and the Arrogant Sea, others. (open 7am-10:30pm; music starts at 8am and lasts 'til close.) 

Denton: RECORD STORE DAY SALE AT RECYCLED BOOKS -- 20 percent off all records, including RSD exclusives. (open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.)

Fort Worth: DOC’S RECORDS RSDPARTY 2014 -- Def Rain, The Cush, Daniel Markham, others. (open at 11 a.m.; bands at 1 p.m.)
