Dallas Streets to be Blocked in President's New Neighborhood

Dallas, TX – A Preston Hollow neighborhood in Dallas is expected to become a "gated" community today. KERA's BJ Austin says it's preparation for the arrival of the Bush's - the President and First Lady Laura Bush.

The Dallas City Council is expected to approve a request for access gates, related fencing and structures at Daria Drive and Meaders Lane. That would restrict access to Daria Place, a cul du sac, and the new address for President Bush after he leaves office next week. Council member Mitchell Rasansky lives about four blocks away, and welcomes the Bush's to the neighborhood and the "traffic" changes WITH a proviso:

Rasansky: I think it's wonderful. I think it's wonder that he chose Dallas. But it's gonna be done at his expense.

Gated access to public streets is allowed thanks to a 1993 law passed by the state legislature. It allows cities to restrict access to streets on which the dwelling of a former U.S. President is located. That law was passed shortly after President George H.W. Bush left the White House and moved to Houston. The Dallas resolution allowing the new gated access is expected to easily pass.
