Dallas, TX – The busy High Five Interchange in Dallas will add "bicycle traffic" in a year or so. KERA's BJ Austin says Cottonwood Trail organizers broke ground yesterday to extend the trail UNDER the busy interchange.

Tx Dot made the bike trail during construction of the High Five, thanks to1.5 million dollars in Dallas County road and bridge funds. Commissioner Maurine Dickey says construction is now underway to connect the Cottonwood Trail near Forest and Central to the trail UNDER the mammoth arches of the High Five. Dickey hopes this will inspire bicycle commuters to Texas Instruments and other companies.

Dickey: We are the most crowded, the most traffic congested, the most polluted area of Dallas County. So we need trails, and walking trails and open space.

Next year, the Cottonwood link to the Preston Ridge Trail thru Richardson and Plano will be completed. Dickey says "trails" are a 21st century quality of life priority.
