Alamo Drafthouse Offers To Settle $17.31 Lawsuit Filed By Austin Man Against His Date

The Alamo Drafthouse offered to settle a lawsuit filed by a man after a first date went badly. It's not against the movie theater, and the date didn't take place at an Alamo Drafthouse location. CEO Tim League offered a $17.31 gift card Wednesday to smooth things over between a 37-year-old Austin man and a 35-year-old Round Rock woman. Brandon Vezmar filed a claim last week in Travis County for $17.31 against his date for the price of a movie ticket, the Austin American-Statesman reports.

Vezmar and the woman, who met online, went to see "Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2" on May 6 at the Barton Creek Square theater in Austin. He says the woman refused to stop texting, so he suggested she step outside. “This is like one of my biggest pet peeves,” he tells the Statesman. The woman then left the theater and never returned. She says Vezmar had asked her for a refund, but she refused because it was a date after all. [Austin American-Statesman]

• From the U.S. House floor, a Houston Democrat called for Trump’s impeachment.  "Our democracy is at risk," U.S. Rep. Al Green said Wednesday. The Texas Tribune reports: “While Green had previously called for impeachment in a news conference earlier this week, he shined a brighter spotlight on his position Wednesday by reiterating it from the House of Representatives at a time when the push for independent investigations into Trump appear to be picking up steam.” [The Texas Tribune]

• It’s been two years since the biker shootout in Waco that left nine dead. And there have been no criminal trials. On May 17, 2015, rivals biker gangs got into a fight in the parking lot of a Twin Peaks restaurant; 18 were injured and around 175 were arrested. Since then, according to the Texas Standard, “the majority of reporting seems to focus on the tangled nest of legal battles” and “no one knows when, or even if, opening arguments in a single case will proceed.” [Texas Standard]

• Texas has a record-breaking number of Kemp’s ridley sea turtle nests on the coast. Experts says there are 236 and counting. A National Park Service statement Wednesday on Facebook says it's the peak of nesting season and the current figure tops the previous record of 209 nests found in Texas five years ago. Authorities say 43 Kemp's ridley nests were located Tuesday statewide, including 28 at Padre Island National Seashore at Corpus Christi. [The Associated Press]
